Your latest post has received 5,000 likes in five minutes and you have over 2 million followers. You’re famous! The next big thing! Maybe you’re even considered an influencer. Businesses want to start advertising on your platform. You have arrived!

What is it that makes us want to follow people? Is it because followers or following someone can make us feel connected, loved and appreciated, even if we never actually meet the person?

Following just for the sake of following makes no sense, right? Why would we do that? We follow because there is something about a person, or entity that makes us feel we belong. On some level we’re receiving something from them. Humans need connection and relationship. We want to be part of something that’s greater than just little ole us. We want to be linked together by a bond that causes us to feel, “Yes, I’m important! My opinion matters. What I look like matters, what I feel matters”, even if from a distance.

Being a follower is not a bad thing, but who you follow, now that’s important. Are they adding or taking away? Dedicated following requires commitment and loyalty. If I follow someone, what they are offering must be beneficial and continue to enhance an area of my life. If it ceases to do that I’m out. I’m out because following someone requires opening my heart, my mind and engaging with the cause of the person I follow. It requires my precious time and commitment. It’s important to follow the right thing because those we follow influence our life.

In all your following, don’t neglect to follow the one who came from heaven to earth as a little baby boy.

The Magi relentlessly followed the star until they arrived at his manger with gold, frankincense and myrrh. The shepherds left their flock to follow the instructions of the angels who told of his birth. This Christmas, I’m inviting you to consider following the one who can make an eternal impact in your life, The Son of God. Check his posts regularly and experience the life giving benefits they bring.
